NSCI 289: Field Tropical Marine Biology Laboratory; Roatan, Honduras; August 10-17, 2008

This Summer quarter course is offered in conjunction with NSCI205 or NSCI286. The course will take place at The Reef House Resort.

The course is specifically designed to introduce non-science majors to the organisms and ecology of tropical marine systems, with a special emphasis on those organisms that live in and among coral reefs.

The course undertakes an introductory survey of tropical marine taxa, from algae, pelagic, and benthic invertebrates, the cartilaginous and bony fishes, to marine reptiles and marine mammals.

Beach A brief overview of coral reef ecology will also be undertaken so that students are able to understand basic food webs and trophic relationships.
Sea Turtle Students will participate in coral reef surveys, have the opportunity to be involved in the collection of data on an actual sea turtle research project conducted by Stephen G. Dunbar, PhD, Assistant Professor, Loma Linda University, and be able to participate in various optional marine-related excursions.

Daily classroom lectures will be accompanied by daily excursions facilitating opportunities for practical identifications in the field while snorkeling or SCUBA diving.

  • Be sure to register online or in person in Spring Quarter for NSCI 205 or 286.

  • Be sure to register online or in person in Summer Quarter for NSCI 289; August 10-17 (NSCI 205) or August 17-24 (NSCI 286), 2008.

  • You will need a valid passport (expiration date of 3/1/09 or later).

  • Check with your doctor about malaria medication (optional, but recommended).

  • Turn in the waiver form by July 10, 2008.
