Some areas may be difficult to access without special transportation, (e.g. boat, four-wheel drive vehicle) and may take more time to visit (e.g. bad roads, long hikes, etc.). Some virtual visits to some of these difficult sites are included because they help provide a fuller understanding of the region and the issues presented. Please use caution on any real off-road excursions!

If you take a real trip check with local authorities on weather, fire or camping regulations and so on. Check the current schedule and call the tourist bureau or state park before you leave.  Sometimes during off-season certain roads are blocked or park hours may be curtailed. Always be prepared for emergencies while traveling on backroads, (e.g. flat tires, overheating, breakdown). Bring basic necessities such as food, water, clothing for changing weather, insect repellent, sun-block, and always bring an emergency first aid kit.

If the trip has educational objectives you can maximize both fun and learning by pre-trip  planning and study!  Explore this virtual fieldtrip ahead of time. One of the goals of this module is to make a real trip more enjoyable by allowing you more freedom to explore rather than lecture in the field. 

You can make the trip more stimulating by doing some hands-on activities such as the online the FIELD MAPPING EXERCISE included with this module.
