- MATERIALS ONLINE. Start exploring those materials listed under TOOLS and see also - Bibliographic Resources by THEME. Students should read the SYLLABUS and note specifically guidance on GRADING and ASSIGNMENTS. See also under course INTRODUCTION and OBJECTIVES.
- COURSE FORMAT: The class will be taught in a "seminar" mode--some lectures, considerable discussion, occasional case study analysis and presentation by students, and use of simulation games/computer database activities.
- ASSIGNMENT--due at FIRST CLASS ( ): During the first segment ( ) each student should be ready to briefly summarize orally and in writing (on a 3X5 card) the importance/significance of 10 (ten) of the following Key Figures in Sustainable Development Theory and Practice (worth 10% of the student grade). The students can divide the list among themselves at the first session. The students should write a brief bio on each one (one side of the card) and then on the back side write the significance/importance as they see it, i.e. what is that person's major contribution to the study of "sustainability thought and practice". See also CYBRARY (for the course SPOL 624).
- Students will choose from a selection of topics given to them during the first segment ( ). These topics will be fodder for a set of TWO short synthesis reports that they will post on the web later for discussion. This will be worth 50% of their grade. Select the topics from key issues/themes or schools of thought listed under the Introduction and Course Objectives. During the first segment ( ) we will take some time to briefly discuss options and I'll provide guidance on where to find materials etc. If you have any other specific "schools of thought/topics" to suggest I'd appreciate hearing of them immediately.
- Students will also select and prepare a FINAL Research Project Report due at the end of the quarter--see CALENDAR in BLACKBOARD . At that time they will make both a written and oral presentation of 30 minutes. We will also help them choose that in the first segment--it is worth (30% of their grade). More on this later.
- The COURSE SCHEDULE will be revised and updated as needed.
