VIDEOS

Allied Video Corporation Educational Videos and Software - Science titles

        PBS ONLINEŽ

        Mt. Pinatubo (NOVA):

About the mid-1980's eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Phillipines and a detailed chronology of work by scientists who "predicted" almost to the minute the spectacular blast that occurred; interviews with victims, military at Subic Bay, Manila, etc. Very great photography.

The Blue Planet (IMAX theatre production for NASA & Air & Space Museum):

A video version of the wonderful feature film usually shown at the Air & Space Museum (Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C. Focuses on Planet Earth as seen from space and discusses the fragility of the earth's biosphere and what humans are doing negatively to destroy it. A wonderful introduction to the "systems view" of the earth.

The Making of a Continent: the Basin and Range Province:

Focus on the geological history of the Yellowstone "hotspot" and related formation of the "Basin & Range" province of the Great Basin in Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

        Earthquake (NOVA)

About what scientists are learning about earthquakes since the Loma Prieta and San Fernando quakes and discussion of possible ways to predic earthquakes.

        Volcano (National Geographic Society-Video):

Focuses on a group of scientists--volcanologists-- who study and photograph live volcanoes around the world.

Virunga: The Heart of Africa (National Geographic Society-Video):

About the Virunga National Park and its establishment as Africa's first National Park. Focus on biological resources from the Semiliki Valley (Lake Edward and the Ruwenzori Mts. to the Virunga Mts and its mountain gorillas. Includes discussion of recent problem of refugee cutting of trees in the park during the refugee crisis post-1994.

The Flooded Amazon Forest (National Geographic Society):

About the annual "flood" cycle in the Amazon showing changing patterns of human and animal adaptation; focus on intricate nature of biodiversity and its relationship to the annual fluctuation of the water cycle. Fabulous pictures of fresh-water dolphins and other "ocean" creatures that became trapped and adapted to this freshwater habitat after the uplift of the Andes Mts.
